Limiting Fire Spread is Critical for Protecting Building Occupants
JENSEN HUGHES provides fire resistance testing and product performance evaluation capabilities to our clients to support product research and development (R&D), code approval/acceptance, forensic analysis, and litigation support. JENSEN HUGHES is unique in the field of fire science and engineering through our ability to develop, test, assess, and implement fire protection concepts and products by incorporating our fire testing capabilities. JENSEN HUGHES combines our in-house R&D testing capabilities with our strong working relationships with commercial fire testing laboratories to solve the most challenging fire protection problems. JENSEN HUGHES has standard and non-standard testing experience acquired through years of participation in test standard development, which is combined with our extensive laboratory testing experience.
Our staff routinely assists clients by conducting a code analysis to identify the required fire-resistance requirements prior to initiating any testing program. Once the applicable code requirements are identified, we work closely with the clients and the commercial testing laboratories to coordinate the testing, oversee construction, and witness tests. This provides JENSEN HUGHES with first-hand knowledge of the product performance above and beyond the fire test standard requirements. Using this testing data, we develop engineering analysis reports which are submitted to code officials for product acceptance or jobsite approval.
Computer Modeling of Assembly Performance
In certain cases, a fire-resistance rated product may be an integral part of a fire-resistance rated building element. Using small- and large-scale fire test data, we utilize finite difference heat transfer computer models to determine the specific insulation thickness or placement in order to obtain the required level of protection. All modeling efforts utilize the test data to calibrate the model in terms of thermal properties before alternative configurations are analyzed.
In-House Testing Capabilities
JENSEN HUGHES has the distinct advantage of having on-site laboratory facilities and instrumentation available to conduct a variety of testing programs. Housed in our 10,000 ft2 testing laboratory, JENSEN HUGHES has the following equipment/capabilities to meet most small-scale fire testing needs:

- Small-scale Fire-Resistance Test Furnace
Materials tested using the Cone Calorimeter provide heat release rate and smoke production data which can be used in conducting fire hazard assessments, demonstrate variations in product performance, and be used as inputs to flame spread models, such as the JENSEN HUGHES-Growth model, to predict performance in a standard room-corner test arrangement.
A 10 ft square oxygen consumption calorimeter, with a peak heat release rate capacity of 1 MW, provides JENSEN HUGHES with the capability of conducting room-scale fire testing to assess product code conformance, flammability, fire growth potential, and smoke production. The results of testing using the oxygen consumption calorimeter are used by our clients for research, product development, and used in fire hazard analyses. JENSEN HUGHES also utilizes a small-scale fire-resistance test furnace. This furnace can subject a 4 ft square sample, mounted horizontally or vertically, to a cellulosic based time-temperature fire exposure (ASTM E119 and ISO 834) as well as flammable liquids pool fire exposures (UL 1709 and ASTM E1529). Test samples can also be loaded during the fire test to simulate the impact of live and dead loads on the material performance.
