Performance Based Design
JENSEN HUGHES is experienced with a wide variety of performance-based fire protection and life safety design approaches for supporting alternate methods of compliance. JENSEN HUGHES staff have extensive experience with NFPA 502, Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, and can help you navigate the approval process for your roadway, bridge, fueling station, and tunnel fire and life safety systems. Our services range from the application of computer-based fire models and egress models to fire alarm and fire suppression systems design, smoke control system design, and other specialized applications such as dispersion modeling of toxic or hazardous materials. We also perform thermal and structural analysis models to determine thermal and structural effects on tunnel or support facilities due to fires.
Codes and Standards
As members of committees and regulatory bodies, JENSEN HUGHES engineers become involved with code issues long before they reach committee. We serve on key committees of interest to the roadway, tunnel, and automotive maintenance facilities and operations fields: NFPA 11, NFPA 30, NFPA 30A, NFPA 52/57, NFPA 72, and NFPA 88A. We also are involved in ICC developmental activities. This participation gives us unique insight into the codes and allows us to provide pragmatic and cost-effective assistance to our clients. Our personnel are experienced in developing guidelines and standards, which have become corporate documents for many clients. Our clients thus develop guidelines that ensure a consistent interpretation and application of standards for all of their operating facilities.
Tunnel Fire Research and Development
JENSEN HUGHES conducts research and development to address the unique challenges of tunnel detection and suppression. We have conducted in-situ research and testing of a wide range of detection systems in the Lincoln Tunnel as part of our work for the Fire Protection Research Foundation. JENSEN HUGHES has participated in and managed research programs to develop water mist protection for roadway tunnels in Europe and has developed new capabilities to allow the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) model to model the thermal management provided by water mist in tunnel fire scenarios. This advanced work complements our long standing expertise in foam sprinklers developed through our research for the US Navy.
Refueling Sites and Alternative Fuels
JENSEN HUGHES has an extensive background from years of dedicated work in the fields of cryogenic, natural gas, propane, diesel, and gasoline refueling. Many code requirements and industry practices have originated from JENSEN HUGHES’ original concepts and designs for natural gas (LNG, L/CNG, and CNG) projects. Our technical consulting addresses the ongoing challenges of daily operational requirements of the fleet and refueling station. We cover not only technical issues, but also focus on reducing challenges and the time to implementation. Our technical and engineering expertise includes hands-on experience at all levels, such as collaborating with maintenance groups, shops, and mechanics.
