Fire Protection and Life Safety (FLS) Training
JENSEN HUGHES’ experienced staff of engineers and technicians has earned a reputation of being experts with the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies within the Department of Transportation by developing and delivering training courses on virtually every aspect of fire protection and life safety.
On-Line Web-Based Courses
JENSEN HUGHES has developed on-line web-based training courses for the FAA. Educational course content was developed by JENSEN HUGHES engineers and the courses were created by Next Knowledge. Currently listed in the FAA Training Course Catalog are the following JENSEN HUGHES developed courses:
- Course FAA49410001 FAA FIRESTOPPING TRAINING
The firestopping training course is a 3 hour on-line web-based training course that assists technicians with the subject of firestopping including identification through design, inspection, maintenance, repair and replacement. This course explains what firestopping is and why it is important. It introduces technicians to the wide variety of products that are available. The course provides step-by-step examples on how to evaluate firestopping problems, how to determine the appropriate solution, and how to install the chosen system.
- Course FAA68000234 FIRE LIFE SAFETY (FLS) ENGINEERING COURSE
The FLS engineering training course is a 24 hour on-line web-based training course that is broken into 20 separate modules covering topics such as “The Use of Codes”, “Fire Resistance Rated Walls”, “Exit Signage and Lighting” and “Risk Management Plans”. Course materials are presented in an interactive manner with pop-ups and mouse-overs, self-test practice questions, and a quiz at the end of each module.
Fire Protection Systems Maintenance Training
JENSEN HUGHES maintains the course materials and provides skilled instructors to teach the four-day long courses on the maintenance of fire protection systems at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) located in Oklahoma City, OK to FAA Technical Operations personnel. On a yearly basis the courses are offered five times a year. The course work provides training to FAA technicians on the maintenance of fire protection systems installed in Airport Traffic Control Towers (ATCTs) and in Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCCs). It includes 16 hours of presentations and lectures and 16 hours of hands-on work. Presentations and lecture subjects include a description of and purpose of system components, code requirements, testing criteria, and maintenance of systems. Participants in the hands-on work are exposed to the application of troubleshooting methodologies, operation, testing and repair of the fire alarm system, and familiarization and operation of the interfaces between the fire alarm system related components on full-scale fire alarm system trainer panels that were built by JENSEN HUGHES.
Students are also provided with a full-scale hands-on firestopping exercise, where students are given a wall assembly, a series of penetrations of various materials, and asked to find a firestopping solution using UL Directories, build the firestopping system, and inspect it for quality assurance/quality control.
Currently listed in the FAA Training Course Catalog are the following courses taught and maintained by JENSEN HUGHES:
- Course FAA68000239 through 243 ATCT Fire Protection System Maintenance (5 course offerings)
- Course FAA68000244 through 248 ARTCC Fire Protection System Maintenance (5 course offerings)
JENSEN HUGHES maintains the course materials and provides skilled instructors to teach the Air Sampling-Type Smoke Detection (ASSD) portion of the combined three day course that provides hands-on training for technicians who maintain the Viking Firecycle sprinkler systems and Air Sampling Smoke Detection Systems. This course is taught in Grand Rapid, MI.
Course FAA 12670, Viking Firecycle and Air Sampling Smoke Detection (ASSD) includes 16 hours of lecture and 16 hours of hands-on training. The ASSD portion includes presentations that provide an overview of ASSD systems and the hands-on training includes inspection, testing, and maintenance of the ASSD systems.
HAI continues to partner with the FAA to raise the level of life safety protection and awareness at FAA facilities around the country.
