Fire Protection Program Development, Implementation and Assessment

Picture_Section 1 - Sectors_Government_DOEJENSEN HUGHES has provided engineering support to project teams responsible for the development and implementation of fire protection program plans. Efforts included preparation of fire protection program plans and assistance in the preparation of implementation lower tier procedures.  HAI also evaluates/assesses fire protection programs for DOE locations.



Fire Hazards Analysis / Fire Risk Assessments

Picture_Section 2 - Sectors_Government_DOEJENSEN HUGHES has prepared numerous fire risk assessments, fire hazards analyses, architectural and site plans, and other related documentation for various DOE building complexes. This often involves development of computer models (both two-zone and three dimensional CFD) of fire scenarios in support of Fire Hazard Analyses. The modeling included prediction of the heat release rate and smoke production rate histories for a number of fire scenarios, the prediction of the fire environment generated, damage to the facility, and the potential for radioactive release from the facility.

Picture_Section 3 - Sectors_Government_DOEDecontamination, Decommissioning and Demolition (D&D) Support

Our involvement was a critical element in success of the multi-billion dollar D&D project at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site (RFETS). HAI’s involvement included the preparation of a specialized chapter for the fire protection program manual, fire testing, design of a wireless fire alarm system, and fire investigations.


Fire and Life Safety Systems Design

At JENSEN HUGHES, we advocate a cohesive design philosophy from concept to execution that results in feasible, practical, goal-oriented fire and life safety systems designs. Throughout the phases of a traditional design, we integrate the necessary elements to present a prescriptive fire protection system that is cost-effective to install and maintain.

Operational Readiness Review Support

JENSEN HUGHES provided a senior level engineer/program manager as the fire protection representative for the operational readiness review for the TRU/Alpha Low Level Waste Treatment Project and the Uranium Disposition Services locations. This detailed support included the review of the documented safety analysis report, fire hazards analysis report, all implementing procedures, response to an emergency drill and interviews with facility personnel.

Fire Department Baseline Needs Assessments

Our engineers were assigned to evaluate minimum staffing and apparatus requirements for various locations including Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), the Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the Hanford Site. Included in the assessments are consolidations of emergency responders into a new Emergency Operations Center.

Codes and Standards Implementation

We offer a full range of building and fire code consultation for developers, owners, and architects. These services ensure customer compliance with the intent of applicable codes or design criteria while meeting the challenges of aesthetics, function, and cost-effectiveness.
