Enabling Expanded and Safe Use of Wine Caves

JENSEN HUGHES has significant expertise addressing the unique fire protection challenges of wine cave design. These facilities often are constructed in rural areas with little or no fire protection infrastructure, limited fire department access and fire protection water supplies. Presently, winery operations are being transferred from within structures to within caves.  In the last decade, many wineries have recognized the potential marketing opportunities related to wine caves.  Wine caves are now being utilized for everything from guided tours and tastings, to banquets and music concerts.  This results in a change in cave characteristics from a low fuel load barrel storage use to an occupancy that can include a measurable fuel load with a dense occupant population.

Design Flexibility

Most building and fire codes do not address fire protection and life safety requirements for wine cave occupancies. JENSEN HUGHES has been successfully providing fire protection consulting and engineering services incorporating design flexibility & code equivalencies by developing creative solutions that meet the aesthetic and cost concerns of an owner, while providing an acceptable level of life safety for building and fire officials. JENSEN HUGHES is also able to meet with the AHJ (authority having jurisdiction) to provide code issue resolution concerning unique design situations.

Fire System Design Services

JENSEN HUGHES is involved in the design of fire suppression and detection systems, determining fire flow requirements for manual firefighting, fire pumps, underground piping systems, fire hydrant locations, and fire protection water supplies.

Other Services

Other fire protection consulting services include hazard classification, site accessibility for fire department vehicles, fire-resistive construction requirements, and egress, life safety, & human movement modeling. JENSEN HUGHES has performed services not just for the wine caves themselves, but also for other buildings associated with the winery, including storage areas, bottling areas, office areas, hospitality buildings, commercial kitchens, and dining areas.
