The $3.3 Million Sydney Light Rail mass transportation project began in 2014 with mapped out goals to ease traffic congestion, allow travellers to navigate urban topography with ease and support the economic growth of the region.

Not only does the system provide direct connections to the Central Business District, Sydney Football Stadium, Sydney Cricket Ground, Randwick Racecourse, and the prestigious University of New South Wales, but it also encompasses pedestrian boulevards, pocket parks, public art and sculptures, outdoor furniture and landscape designs.

Jensen Hughes Australia, (formally BCA Logic and MGAC), consulted on accessibility, universal design, fire and life safety expertise, inspections and Crown Certification for this transformative project alongside Acciona and Aspect Studio Architects.

Prior to the light rail development, many of these destinations were supported by a dated public bus service, but now they are conveniently connected through this state-of-the-art rail system. The light rail trains now accommodate 450 passengers per trip, the equivalent of up to nine standard buses.

The resulting design created and opened access to outdoor spaces, retail, dining and a car-free corridor. One of the notable design challenges was creating efficient interchange points between light rail, heavy rail, and ferries, while folding in new connections points in the system.

Our scope of work included assessment and collation of fire safety certificates and issuance of a S109R BCA Completion Statement / Crown Certificate. We also consulted on the integration of fully accessible lifts and level access between trains and platforms, improved hearing loops and vision impaired functionality, accessible emergency help points, and portable boarding ramps. In addition, our team carried out routine inspections of construction development alongside written inspection reports, compliance advisement and clarifications.

We are proud to have helped this client achieve their customer promise of making sure all passengers have a safe, reliable and comfortable journey with a safe and clean environment accessible to all, a reliable and punctual service, easily accessible and accurate information and friendly and helpful customer service prepared to assist people of all abilities.
