1 Queen Street
Project Profile
The 1 Queen Street redevelopment in Auckland, completed at the beginning of 2024, is a remarkable 21-storey structure overlooking the picturesque Waitematā Harbour. This state-of-the-art building features a luxury hotel, a rooftop bar, and 14,000 square meters of prime office space. Jensen Hughes was engaged to provide comprehensive Fire Engineering and Passive Fire design advice for the project.
Classified as a "tall building," the project required a complete performance-based design, necessitating benchmarking against international standards and IHG's internal guidelines rooted in US-centric NFPA compliance documents. Our fire engineering team skilfully navigated this complex balance, ensuring the design met all regulatory requirements while maintaining the integrity of the project's architectural vision.
Jensen Hughes' design included a carefully planned fire-fighting shaft for brigade access and operations, the modelling of multiple floors with vertical connectivity and atria, and detailed evacuation modelling for the entire building, which was staged and sequenced to account for safety and efficiency.
The completion of the 1 Queen Street redevelopment is a testament to the seamless integration of innovative design and engineering. It demonstrates how safety and aesthetic objectives can coexist in a fully compliant building. It was a privilege to collaborate with all stakeholders in delivering such a landmark achievement.
