New World Point Chevalier
Project Profile
The New World Point Chevalier is a supermarket that opened in mid-2025 as part of a $73 million investment by Foodstuffs North Island. The facility features a 2,752m² double-height supermarket built above a basement car park. It includes a staff mezzanine, is expected to generate 120 jobs, and offers 105 parking spaces along with six team checkouts and eight self-scan checkouts. Additionally, the broader development encompasses 2,000m² of mixed-use office space above the store and 147m² of retail space along Great North Road, which will initially be used for online order pickups.
Jensen Hughes provided fire engineering, fire protection, and passive fire design consultancy for this project. Our team conducted a performance-based fire engineering design using C/VM2, which included detailed fire and smoke modelling along with egress calculations to ensure safe occupant evacuation during a fire. Early engagement with regulatory stakeholders, including Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and a peer reviewer, helped align key design principles and streamline the approvals process.
Our team also offered fire protection consultancy involving the design and modelling of fire safety systems, such as sprinkler pumps, sprinkler runs, and fire alarm panels, all coordinated to meet performance requirements. The design was tailored for efficient installation and long-term maintenance, with layouts aligned with operational needs. Collaborating early with FENZ ensured agreement on the placement of critical firefighting infrastructure, further contributing to a streamlined approval process.
Moreover, our passive fire team provided essential consultancy on the design of passive fire systems for service penetrations. We delivered clear, pre-approved solutions that expedited on-site construction and ensured compliance with fire safety requirements. Throughout the project, we conducted construction monitoring to proactively identify and resolve issues before they could lead to any delays.
Jensen Hughes is proud to have collaborated with both Savills New Zealand and Foodstuffs North Island to bring this project to life, which will serve the community in Point Chevalier for years to come. Our team's efforts in fire engineering, fire protection, and passive fire design consultancy, along with our consistent engagement with all stakeholders, helped ensure a streamlined approval process while also meeting relevant performance requirements.
