Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp
Project Profile
The Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp is a 170 metre long bike ramp that connects the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Milsons Point, making cycling across the iconic harbour accessible to everyone. The project introduces new crossings, footpaths, shared paths, and bike lanes, transforming the area into a safer, more inclusive, and enjoyable environment for Sydneysiders and visitors alike. The ramp bypasses 55 stairs, with a design that thoughtfully respects the site’s historical significance, incorporating Aboriginal artwork into the pavement and using building materials sourced from across Australia.
The cycleway ramp uses a gently winding form made up of simple, flowing curves. Its design is deliberately organic, combining a light and open appearance with the practical needs of strength, ease of construction, sustainability, and long term maintenance. By balancing these qualities, the structure reduces its visual impact on the Harbour Bridge and Bradfield Park and limits the amount of shadow cast on the ground below. The project sets a new standard for cycling infrastructure in a sensitive heritage setting and offers a strong vision for the future of cycling as part of Sydney’s transport network.
As a Technically Assured Organisation (TAO) for Transport for NSW (Transport), Jensen Hughes is authorised to deliver a comprehensive suite of compliance and assurance services, including Building Code of Australia (BCA) compliance, Crown Certification, fire safety engineering, and Accessibility compliance. This accreditation framework allows us to provide end to end regulatory assurance on complex infrastructure projects, from early design development through to construction and completion. Our building code consultants hold unrestricted accreditations, enabling us to issue Crown Certificates and undertake statutory inspections for Crown projects across New South Wales.
Working in close collaboration with Arenco and Transport, Jensen Hughes played a key role in ensuring the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp met all applicable requirements. Our team provided guidance on compliance pathways and proactively identified and resolved potential regulatory risks. Through close collaboration with stakeholders, the project successfully achieved Crown Certification, demonstrating full alignment with statutory requirements.
In addition to Crown Certification services, Jensen Hughes delivered comprehensive BCA consultancy and accessibility consultancy throughout the project lifecycle. Our involvement commenced during the early design phases, where we reviewed documentation and prepared detailed compliance assessments. This early engagement enabled design issues to be resolved proactively, minimising the need for rework and supporting efficient progression through approvals.
During the construction phase, our team maintained ongoing involvement through regular progress inspections, working closely with Arenco and Transport to verify that the works were being delivered in accordance with the approved design intent and compliance strategy. We provided clear, practical advice to the project team on implementing key design details, ensuring accessibility and building code requirements were appropriately addressed on site.
The successful delivery of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp marks a significant step forward for active transport and accessibility in Sydney. By collaborating closely with project partners and applying our regulatory expertise throughout every stage, Jensen Hughes helped realise a landmark piece of infrastructure that enhances connectivity, safety, and inclusivity for the community.
