Sustainable Design Services

Our sustainable design services focus on delivering high-performance, climate responsive buildings that are efficient, comfortable, and future ready. We provide strategic input across key areas, including net zero pathways, low embodied carbon strategies, and specialised modelling services; helping you optimise building performance, achieve meaningful sustainability outcomes, and enhance long-term value.

Enhancing Comfort + Energy Efficiency

Jensen Hughes provides comprehensive solutions for optimising building performance through advanced modelling techniques. We offer strategic expertise across areas such as net zero planning, carbon reduction strategies, and specialist modelling services—helping you maximise performance, achieve meaningful sustainability outcomes, and enhance long-term value.

Net Zero Strategies

Net zero strategies focus on reducing a building’s carbon footprint by balancing energy demand with renewable energy supply and minimising embodied carbon across its lifecycle. We work closely with project teams to develop tailored pathways to net zero, incorporating energy efficient design, electrification, onsite renewables, and carbon offsetting where necessary. Our approach aligns with recognised frameworks and industry benchmarks to help projects meet ambitious emissions targets, future-proof assets, and contribute meaningfully to climate action goals.

Dynamic Energy Modelling

Dynamic energy modelling using the industry-recognised IES VE software allows us to simulate a building’s energy performance in detail across varying seasons and operating conditions. By incorporating real world factors such as occupancy patterns, weather data, and system interactions, it delivers precise insights into energy consumption, thermal comfort, and HVAC efficiency. This empowers designers and stakeholders to make informed decisions early in the design process, optimise building systems, reduce operational costs, and meet higher sustainability standards. Ultimately, dynamic modelling supports the delivery of buildings that are both energy efficient and comfortable, contributing to long term environmental and financial benefits.

Natural Daylight Modelling + Glare Analysis

Natural daylight is proven to enhance cognitive performance, physical health and mood, which is why we prioritise optimising daylight and minimising glare in building design. Using advanced modelling software like RadianceIES, our ESD consultants assess factors such as building orientation, materials, weather, and climate to maximise natural light while maintaining thermal comfort and reducing reliance on artificial lighting. We also ensure compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC) and other relevant standards, verifying that all habitable rooms meet required daylight levels, especially in designs where windows are near neighbouring boundaries or obstructions and may limit natural light.

Passive Design Strategies

Passive design strategies focus on maximising the natural environmental conditions to improve building comfort and reduce energy consumption while reducing the reliance on mechanical systems. By carefully considering site specific factors we provide design input strategies to optimise heat gain and loss throughout the year. Our approach integrates passive design principles early in the project to create buildings that stay naturally cool in summer and warm in winter, enhancing occupant comfort while lowering operational costs and environmental impact. Through thoughtful design, passive strategies contribute to resilient, energy efficient buildings that perform sustainably over their lifetime.

Carbon Reduction Strategies

Carbon reduction strategies focus on minimising greenhouse gas emissions throughout a building’s entire lifecycle from design and construction to operation and eventual decommissioning. By prioritising low carbon materials, energy efficient systems, renewable energy integration, and carbon offsetting where necessary, these strategies aim to significantly lower the building’s carbon footprint. We work closely with project teams to develop tailored carbon reduction pathways that align with sustainability goals and regulatory requirements, helping to future proof assets while supporting broader climate action commitments. Through these efforts, we enable buildings to contribute positively to environment and achieve long term resilience.

Thermal Comfort Assessment

Energy and thermal comfort simulation is used to predict the realistic annual energy demand of a building once completed and help minimise the use of artificial heating and cooling. Our energy and sustainability consultants can perform energy and thermal simulations for accurate predictions of annual energy demand and thermal comfort levels of a building. We also assist in recommending design and service changes to achieve an efficient outcome, thereby reducing energy costs throughout the lifetime of the building.

Condensation Management Analysis

Condensation and mould growth within external walls and roofs can be harmful to our health and cause rotting of insulation, boards and framing. Our energy and sustainability consultants use hygrothermal modelling software to provide condensation analysis and management assessments and predict mould growth based on substrate material, temperature and relative humidity. We also provide technical advice for minimising the risk of mould growth in your building and complying with the latest NCC requirements.
