Australian Parliament House

Jensen Hughes was engaged as the fire safety engineering consultant for Parliament House in Canberra, the meeting place of the Australian Parliament and the core of the Australian Government. Officially opened in 1988, Parliament House continues to evolve, and our fire safety strategies have focused on ensuring the building meets or exceeds contemporary standards. During our engagement, we have developed comprehensive fire engineering reports, including advanced 3D modelling of public areas and evacuation simulations to analyse smoke movement and evacuation times effectively. Our commitment extends to providing fire engineering advice for all new works, including during construction periods when areas are sectioned off and mechanical systems and evacuation paths may be disrupted, increasing the risk of fire, along with the potential for fire safety systems to be offline.

Our team have implemented tailored fire safety strategies and performance-based methodologies, establishing a benchmark for fire safety that encompasses both the existing building and new developments. Collaboration with ACT Fire & Rescue, the Parliament House Building Controller, and other key stakeholders has been essential to ensure support for our fire safety strategy. We also reviewed various building legislations across multiple jurisdictions and contributed to a site specific building certification policy for new works, which is currently under review by project stakeholders.

There has been a strong focus on project management as we engage with multiple work packages concurrently. This enabled effective communication of priorities and status updates throughout the working groups managed by the Department of Parliamentary Services. The work we continue to conduct on this historic building exemplifies our expertise in delivering tailored fire safety engineering solutions for complex existing structures, addressing heritage requirements and security measures while exceeding National Construction Code standards.
