Industry News: NSW, WA and SA Still Refusing to Ensure New Builds Have Accessibility Features

Despite pressure from disability advocates, New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia say they will not include clauses in the revised National Construction Code (NCC) requiring basic accessibility features.

The features, such as the inclusion of at least one step-free entrance, a toilet on the entry-level and a walk-in shower recess, were added to the NCC after disability advocates lobbied to have them included. Some of the states are citing issues around housing affordability as the main reason for their refusal.

Meanwhile, disability advocates insist that a refusal to include them puts further pressure on those with a disability who often experience difficulty finding a home that meets their basic needs.
