Kimmo Vähäkoski

With 20 years in the industry, Kimmo’s interest in fire safety first began when he volunteered for a local fire brigade. Since then, he has gained a great deal of experience as a fire inspector and officer with both the Finnish Southwestern rescue services and Tampere regional rescue department. He also taught fire safety technology and fire physics for almost 10 years and was involved in the R&D department at the Emergency Services Academy. Clearly, Kimmo’s many years of practical and teaching experience provided a solid base for a smooth transition into fire safety engineering. With a special interest in fire safety and functional design of underground and production facilities, His projects have ranged from fire safety statements of residential buildings to fire safety planning for sports facilities and traffic tunnels. 

Kimmolla on kokemusta paloturvallisuusalalta 20 vuoden ajalta. Ensin Kimmo oli vapaaehtoisena palokuntalaisena Kurisjärven VPK:ssa ja lopulta harrastuksesta tuli työ, kun hän siirtyi palomiehen ja ylipalomiehen sijaisuuksien kautta palotarkastajaksi Varsinais-Suomen aluepelastuslaitokselle. Palotarkastajan tehtävien lisäksi Kimmo on työskennellyt Tampereen aluepelastuslaitoksella palomestarina sekä muutamaa päivää vaille kymmenen vuotta Pelastusopistolla opettajana. Pelastusopistolla Kimmon opetuksen vastuualueeseen kuului paloturvallisuustekniikan ja palofysiikan opetus, ja lisäksi hän osallistui onnettomuuksienehkäisytiimissä Pelastusopiston tutkimus- ja kehittämistoimintaan. Tuotanto- ja varastorakennusten paloturvallisuus, toiminnallinen suunnittelu ja maanalaiset tilat ovat Kimmon kiinnostuksen kohteita, ja projektien puolesta hän on osallistunut laaja-alaisesti erilaisiin hankkeisiin, mm asuinrakennusten paloturvallisuuslausunnoista suuren liikuntahallin poistumisen suunnitteluun oletettuun palon kehitykseen perustuen sekä liikennetunnelin paloturvallisuussuunnitteluun.
