What does Qmax mean in sprinkler system design, and why does it matter?

In an article for the International Fire and Safety Journal, Andrew Cowan, Senior Engineer, explains how BS EN 12845 uses hydraulic calculations to determine the maximum water flow demand a sprinkler system must deliver.

Andrew emphasises that an understanding of Qmax enables engineers to design systems that provide reliable fire protection while ensuring an adequate water supply under the most demanding conditions. By examining the relationship between system demand curves, pump performance and hydraulic calculations, we can see how these factors define the maximum flow requirement for sizing sprinkler water storage and ensuring effective fire protection.
