Tiistilä School and Daycare

The new Tiistilä school and daycare centre in Espoo is one of the largest wooden schools in Finland, providing safe, healthy and adaptable facilities for nearly 1,000 schoolchildren and 170 daycare children. The two-storey wooden building, which has been designed to meet the requirements of modern education and sustainable development objectives, contributes to the City of Espoo's carbon neutrality goals through the use of wood materials and energy-efficient solutions such as solar panels and geothermal heating.

Our team acted as fire safety engineers for the project, ensuring that the building's fire safety solutions met both the regulations and the specific requirements of timber construction. In addition to the traditional fire design, the project involved innovative development work to ensure the functionality of the structural details. This included comprehensive analysis and product development of structural sealants and gaskets.

The timber construction's unique characteristics and the site's scale required precise planning and close cooperation between the different parties involved. In terms of fire safety solutions, our team focused on establishing structural fire safety, safe escape routes, and the reliability of the systems in all situations. This ensured that the Tiistilä school and daycare centre would provide a safe learning environment for all occupants.

The site was awarded the 2024 Hurraa! award for a particularly meritorious and successful work related to the built environment. The award was granted by the Espoo Environment and Building Board and Espoo Building Control.
