Rhode Island's Fire Code Updates: NFPA 1, 72 + 101
Effective March 1, 2026, the Rhode Island Fire Safety Code will undergo significant updates to reflect newer editions of several National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards. These updates are intended to address emerging risks; incorporate new technologies in detection, suppression, and other fire systems; implement changes based on lessons learned from incidents that have occurred; address the use of new construction materials and/or techniques; and provide additional guidance of the application of Fire Safety Code requirements to work performed in existing buildings.
Key updates include:
- NFPA 1 – Fire Code (2021 Edition) adopted as the foundation of the Rhode Island Fire Code
- NFPA 101 – Life Safety Code (2021 Edition) adopted as the basis for the Rhode Island Life Safety Code (RILSC)
- NFPA 101 Chapter 43 – Building Rehabilitation now included in the RILSC for clearer guidance on requirements in existing buildings
- NFPA 72 – National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code (2022 Edition) adopted as the basis for the Rhode Island Fire Alarm Code
- NFPA 13, 14, & 20 (2019 Editions) adopted for the design and installation of sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, and fire pumps We understand that keeping up with evolving codes and standards can feel overwhelming. That’s why our team is here to help you navigate these updates with confidence.
