New Jersey Uniform Construction Code (UCC) Update
The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) has adopted the 2024 International Codes (I-Codes), along with related model codes and standards, as part of the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code (UCC). These regulations became effective on August 17, 2026.
Key Implementation Details
- The 2024 editions of the International Code Council’s I-Code series became the applicable codes for projects submitted on or August 17, 2026, subject to New Jersey amendments.¹
- Projects with permits issued prior to the adoption date may generally continue under the code edition in effect at the time the permit was issued, provided the permit remains valid and work proceeds in accordance with UCC requirements.
- If a permit expires or a project requires resubmission after adoption of the new codes, the project may be required to comply with the code edition in effect at the time of the new permit application or permit reinstatement.¹
- New Jersey's Barrier Free Subcode now references Chapter 11 of the 2024 International Building Code and ICC A117.1-2017, along with applicable New Jersey amendments. ¹
- New Jersey adopted the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) for low-rise residential buildings and ASHRAE 90.1-2022 for commercial and other residential construction. ¹
- New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code is administered statewide by the DCA. Local jurisdictions enforce the code but generally do not adopt their own amendments to the model codes.¹ʼ²
