Fundamentals of Process Safety Management for Canadian Industry
Registration Closed – New PSM Training Session Coming February 2026
Registration for this session of our Process Safety Management (PSM) training is now closed. If you’re interested in strengthening your understanding of PSM principles and the Canadian PSM Standard, a new session will be offered in February 2026.
Learn the key principles and practices of Process Safety Management (PSM) through our expertly designed training course. Whether you oversee operations in high-risk industries or are working to elevate workplace safety standards, this introductory course provides a strong foundation built around the Canadian PSM Standard.
What Will This Course Cover?
Defining process safety and its importance; understanding the key principles and objectives of PSM; the relationship between process safety and occupational safety; and regulatory drivers. The PSM framework and its constituent elements will be presented.
Process safety hazards, with a focus on flammable gases, liquids, and toxic materials, and their incidents and consequences, with a focus on fires, explosions and toxic vapor clouds; brief introduction to consequence modelling.
Techniques for identifying and assessing hazardous material risks; overview of common process hazard analysis (PHA) methods like HAZOP, HAZID, FMEA, and What If;; Quantitative Risk Assessment; risk evaluation including the use and development of risk matrices, and risk informed decision-making based on the ALARP principle; life cycle risk assessment. This module will also include a brief discussion of Process Safety Information (PSI); hazard and risk registers
Process safety leadership; process safety culture; conduct of operations and organizational discipline; monitoring and continual improvement; human factors engineering and human error; regulations, codes and standards
Training and competency; management of change; integrity of equipment; procedures; safe work practices; PSSR; engineering assessments; temporary removal equipment from service; effective communication of safety protocols; Lockout/tagout (LOTO)
Quality of incoming materials; quality control in construction; quality assurance of engineering and risk assessments; quality review of standards, guidelines, procedures, programs and systems
Developing and implementing emergency response plans; coordination with first responders and local authorities; drills and simulations to assess and improve response effectiveness
Incident Investigation and root cause analysis; auditing; enhancement of process safety knowledge; Process Safety Performance Indicators (PSPI)
PSM system design – focus on PSM framework; principles for design, development and implementation of policies and program governance; gap assessment to PSM system; addressing and closing gaps; system maturity; periodic reviews and audits to check how system is working; continual improvement; business case for PSM Program
The Buncefield incident will be used to showcase PSM elements and how the contributed to the incident.
Meet Our Presenters
Marcello Oliverio
Marcello is the recipient of the 2019 Process Safety Management (PSM) Award, which recognizes his outstanding contributions to the PSM field within Canada.
He is recognized nationally as a subject matter expert on risk assessment, risk management and process safety management. He began performing PHAs and QRAs in his first position, and the work expanded to include HAZOPs and HAZIDs and dispersion modelling. He worked with Ontario Power Generation (Ontario Hydro) on issues such as management of nuclear safety systems, radiological dose assessment, and human reliability modelling. He became a manager of process risk assessment with AMEC-NSS, working on projects in the nuclear, chemical, petrochemical, transportation and mining sectors. He became the Chief Engineer with Superior Propane and guided them through the change in regulations following the Sunrise Propane incident. He retired in 2020 after a seven-year term as PSM technical leader at Enbridge where he led the development and implementation of PSM within the company. Since 2020 he has provided PSM consulting services to clients in Canada, USA and Europe.
Marcello has been actively involved with the CSChE Process Safety Management Division for many years, chairing the division from 2013-2015 and currently is a technical committee member of CSA 767 Process Safety Management Standard.
