Craig Beyler Wins Kawagoe Gold Medal

Dr. Craig Beyler, Technical Director Emeritus, will be awarded the 2017 Kunio Kawagoe Gold Medal by the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS) in recognition of his life-long contributions and career achievements in fire science and engineering. He will receive the award at the IAFSS 12th International Symposium of Fire Safety Science in Lund, Sweden.

Dr. Beyler has dedicated his 35-year career to the field of fire protection engineering and served as the Technical Director for Jensen Hughes for 24 years. Dr. Beyler was Chairman of IAFSS for two terms, from 2005 – 2011. During this period, he led the innovative creation of the digital online library where all of the symposium proceedings and other research publications were made globally accessible to researchers for free.

In addition, Dr. Beyler serves on the Advisory Boards for three universities with fire protection engineering programs, was Editor-in-Chief for two journals, and also co-Editor for the SFPE Handbook, Edition 1-4. He was committee chair for development of two SFPE standards, and served on several NFPA standards making committees, including NFPA 921, where he assisted in integrating more science into fire investigations.
