Lithium-ion batteries are rapidly replacing lead-acid systems in data centers thanks to their higher efficiency, smaller footprint, and longer lifespan. But with these advantages come new fire safety and compliance challenges. Updated codes like NFPA 855, IFC 2024, and NEC Article 706 now require stricter measures—sprinkler upgrades, gas detection, ventilation, and explosion mitigation—while states and cities add their own rules. For operators, especially in retrofits, early risk assessments and fire protection engineering are critical to safe, compliant designs.
